The 17-year-old carried out the unprovoked attack on the 37-year-old victim in Church Place in Brighton in May. He stabbed a woman in the head for no apparent reason.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, possessing an offensive weapon and possessing a knife in a public place.

At Brighton Magistrates' Court last week he was given a two-year detention and training order.
