Drugs Briefing: Nitazenes – Advice for Security & Frontline Staff

Nitazenes are a type of New Synthetic Opioid (NSO). These synthetic opioids mimic the effects of natural opioids such as heroin but can be hundreds of times stronger and at least as potent as fentanyl. There have been accidental overdoses and deaths across the UK due to heroin and other drugs being contaminated with nitazenes.

Increased Overdose Risk

  • Drugs may look the same even if contaminated.

  • Nitazenes have been found in drugs like heroin, cannabis, Spice, THC vapes, and marshmallow leaf (a herbal tobacco alternative) sold online.

  • Overdoses linked to these substances have been reported in Brighton, with people responding to Naloxone, confirming opioid contamination.

How to Recognise an Overdose

Security teams and venue staff should watch for these signs:

  • Deep snoring/gurgling noises

  • Unresponsive to shaking or being called by name

  • Blue lips, nails, or extremities

  • Stopped or slowed breathing

If someone shows these signs, call 999 immediately.

What to Do in an Overdose Situation

✅ Call 999 immediately – do not delay.

✅ If trained, administer Naloxone – it can reverse opioid overdoses and save a life.

✅ Keep the person awake and breathing – lay them on their side in the recovery position.

✅ Stay with them until paramedics arrive – the effects of Naloxone wear off quickly.

Important: Naloxone only works for opioid overdoses, but if you’re unsure what someone has taken, it is still safe to use. It won’t harm them and could save their life.
