Did You Know? Operation Apprentice: Tackling Business Crime in Brighton

Businesses across Brighton face daily challenges from acquisitive crime, but thanks to Operation Apprentice, significant progress is being made to protect businesses, staff, and the wider community.

This innovative partnership, led by the Brighton Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP) and Sussex Police, is designed to proactively target prolific offenders who cause harm to businesses. By combining intelligence from our DISC system with insights from key stakeholders—including Change Grow Live, the Business Improvement District (BID), and Sussex Police’s Initial Investigation Team (IIT)—we identify crime hotspots and take action where it’s needed most.

How It Works
Operation Apprentice begins with bi-weekly intelligence meetings, where reports from members and partners help us pinpoint offenders and areas of concern. From there, focused days of action are planned, where BCRP field officers work alongside police and partners to gather evidence, solve problems, and even make arrests. It’s a coordinated effort to not just address crime but also its underlying causes, offering support where needed to break cycles of offending.

Real Results
From securing court orders to reducing repeat offenses, Operation Apprentice has delivered real, measurable outcomes for businesses and the community. By focusing on the bigger picture—whether it’s addressing substance misuse or improving safety in hotspot areas—this initiative continues to drive meaningful change.

The relationship between the Sussex Police Business Crime Team and BCRP is integral to the success of identifying and catching offenders impacting on our business communities. Working closely together along with the businesses of Brighton and Hove we will continue to bring those causing the most harm to justice and making every effort in making our communities safe.
