Scammers find a home in Brighton

A web of fraudulent companies have been impersonating local Brighton company Domestic & General [D&G] in an organised scam network. D&G is the UK's leading electrical appliance warranty provider, and these rogue firms, often based in Brighton, have been cold-calling D&G customers and misleading them into diverting payments under the guise of renewing or upgrading appliance insurance policies. They particularly target the elderly with high pressure scripts sometimes leading to phone calls lasting over an hour.

Now, in a significant High Court ruling, D&G succeeded against several companies and individuals, with the judgment declaring that the scammers’ interference with D&G's relationship with its customers was illegal. This case has had a deterrent effect, especially in Brighton which had become a hub for such activities due to a skilled workforce and a ready supply of the city’s students seeking employment.

Domestic & General has emphasized that it never sells data to third parties and has not experienced a data breach, suggesting that these scammers obtain customer information through other means.
